Calumet Farm Single Rack Black 16 Year: Named For Citation

This is the top of the Calumet Farm range: sixteen years in oak, bottled at 106 proof (53% ABV) and non chill filtered. The batch is drawn from a single rack in the rickhouse, nineteen barrels, which is why the label carries its own batch number rather than a brand-wide one.

Citation, and Why the Name Is Earned

Calumet Farm in Lexington bred and raced some of the greatest thoroughbreds in American history, and Citation is the one this bottle honors. He won the Triple Crown in 1948 under jockey Eddie Arcaro and trainer Ben A. Jones, put together a sixteen race winning streak, and became the first thoroughbred in history to earn one million dollars.

Sixteen years of aging for a sixteen race streak. The number on the bottle is not a coincidence.

• Mash bill: 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley

Non chill filtering matters more at this age. Sixteen years puts a lot of oil and wood extract into the whiskey, and filtering it cold to make it look clear would strip exactly the part you paid for. This is bottled with all of it in.

Tasting Notes

• Colour: Deep mahogany with dark red shadows and golden highlights.
• Nose, on opening: Woody char and smoke giving way to toasted almond and fresh cut summer hay.
• Nose, after it breathes: Citrus and orange lift, with darker floral and cherry underneath.
• Palate: Saturated oak and warm rye spice, then cherry, dark fruit and baking spice, closing on fresh baked bread, toasted toffee and a dry cornmeal note.
• Finish: Lighter than the proof suggests. Subtle warmth, toasted grain and a smokiness that mellows into wood sugar and oak.

How to Enjoy

• Neat, and give it air: the nose changes completely after ten minutes. That is the whole experience with this bottle.
• A few drops of water: pulls the fruit forward against the oak.
• Not for mixing: sixteen year old bourbon in a cocktail is a waste of the wood.
