Laws Four Grain Cask Strength: World's Best Small Batch Bourbon, at 113.2 Proof

In 2024 the World Whiskies Awards named Laws Four Grain Straight Bourbon the World's Best Small Batch Bourbon. This is that whiskey undiluted, bottled straight from the barrel.

Laws Whiskey House builds Four Grain in harmonious 100 barrel batches, then selects the individual barrels with the most concentrated character to bottle at cask strength rather than proofing them down. This is batch A-23, and because nothing is added or diluted, its strength is specific to it: 56.6% ABV, 113.2 proof.

Four Grains, All of Them Real

Plenty of bourbons claim a grain story. Laws puts four in the mash and gives each one enough room to matter:

• 60% corn
• 20% heirloom wheat
• 10% heirloom rye
• 10% heirloom malted barley

Most bourbons run three grains with the third barely present. At 20% wheat this drinks softer than the proof suggests, and the 10% rye still puts real spice behind it. The grains come from Colorado farms across the San Luis Valley and the Eastern Plains, two very different microclimates, and Laws is a genuine grain to glass operation rather than a brand buying distillate.

Aged at least three years in heavily charred 53 gallon new white oak.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Baking spice and black tea with honeysuckle over dark caramel and cracked grain.
• Palate: Thick and concentrated. Orange, clove and dried fruit with toffee and roasted grain behind heavy char.
• Finish: Long and warm, closing on oak tannin, cocoa and sweet spice.

How to Enjoy

• Neat, small pour: at 113.2 proof it needs no help. Give it time in the glass.
• Water to taste: a few drops at a time unlocks the wheat sweetness. Add slowly, you cannot take it back.
• Cask strength Old Fashioned: stands up to ice and sugar without disappearing.
• Side by side: pour it against a standard three grain bourbon and the wheat and barley are immediately obvious.
